The post-wise SSC CGL age limit for the exam is given below in the table.

  • Aspirants applying for SSC CGL must not be less than 18 years and cannot be more than 32 years of age (as of January 1, 2023). Get more year-wise details here

Nationality Criteria

SSC CGL Nationality

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria as per nationality mandates a candidate to be a resident of the prescribed countries only. An applicant must fulfill any one of the following conditions.

  1. The aspirant must be an Indian citizen.
  2. The candidates can be a subject of Nepal/Bhutan.
  3. The aspirants are allowed to be Tibetan refugees who moved to India, before 1962, with the intention of settling down permanently in India.
  4. The applicant must be of Indian Origin and has moved to India from Burma, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, or East African Countries like Uganda, Kenya, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly known as Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Malawi, Zambia, Ethiopia, Zaire, and Vietnam with the intention of settling down permanently in India.

SSC CGL Educational Qualification

To appear for SSC CGL exam, the aspirants should have completed their graduation from any renowned Institution/ University. More specifically, a Bachelor’s degree in any program is required to appear for the entrance test. Apart from this, the candidates should study either in Mathematics/ Statistics/ Economics as an elective subject or as a compulsory subject.

There are some desirable qualifications too mentioned for certain posts. The candidates having them will be given preference. All the academic requirements corresponding to the different posts are given below.

Statistical Investigator Grade II

Basic Qualification: The candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in any discipline with Statistics as one of the subjects from a recognized university or institute. They must have studied Statistics as one of the subjects in all three years or all 6 semesters of the graduation course.

They should have a Bachelor’s degree with at least 60% marks

Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer

Basic Qualification: The candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university or institute.

Desirable Qualification: Cost & Management Accountant/ Chartered Accountant/ Company Secretary/ Masters in Commerce/ Masters in Business Studies/ Masters in Business Administration (Finance)/ Masters in Business Economics. The selected candidates will be under probation. During the period of probation, they will have to take and clear the ‘Subordinate Audit/ Accounts Service Examination’ in their respective branches for confirmation and regular appointment as Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer.

Compiler Basic Qualification: The candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree from any recognized university or institution. Additionally, candidates must have studied either Economics or Statistics or Mathematics as a compulsory or elective subject.
Assistant Section Officer

Basic Qualification: The applicant must have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University or Institute.

Desirable Qualification: In addition to the basic Undergraduate Degree, candidates must also qualify in the Computer Proficiency Test.

Junior Statistical Officer

Basic Qualification: The candidates can have a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognized University or Institute. They must have scored at least 60% marks in Mathematics in Class 12 or equivalent.

OR

They can have a Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at the degree level.

Assistant in NCLAT

Basic Qualification: The applying candidates shall have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognized University Institute.

Desirable Qualification: A degree in law from a recognized university.

Research Assistant in NHRC

Basic Qualifications: All the candidates shall have a Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised University or Institute.

Desirable Qualifications:

Physical Standards

SSC CGL Posts Requiring Physical Standards

The applicants of the following posts must ensure that they fulfill all the Physical Standards, requirements of Physical Test, and Medical Standards before mentioning their preferences in the SSC CGL application form. The measurement of Physical Standards, Physical Tests, and Medical Tests will be conducted by the concerned User Department after the final selection and nomination of candidates by the SSC.

SSC CGL Physical Standards

To appear in the SSC CGL Exam, the aspirants are required to have the specified physical standards before the final round of selection.

SSC CGL Inspector (Central Excise/ Examiner/ Preventive Officer), Inspector, and Sub-Inspector in CBN

The candidates who are applying for Inspector (Central Excise/ Examiner/ Preventive Officer), Inspector, and Sub-Inspector in CBN posts have to fulfill the Physical Standards and qualify for the Physical Efficiency Test. The details of both are given below.

Physical Standards

The physical fitness requirement includes weight, height, and eye-sight. Read the following content to know more about the SSC CGL Physical Standard Requirements.

Male 157.5 cm The chest must be 81 cm with a minimum of 5 cm expansion. Note: The Garhwali, Assamese, Gorkhas, and the Scheduled Tribes Candidates have been given a relaxation of 5 cm. -

The candidates must also see the physical standard as per the Physical Test is considered.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria 2023: Number of Attempts

There are no restrictions to the number of attempts the candidates take. As long as they fulfill the age criteria, the candidates can appear for the exam any number of times. It must be noted that the age limits for different posts vary. Similarly, the age relaxations differ for each category too. Thus, the candidates must consider both of them while ensuring their eligibility for the SSC CGL exam.

Documents Required for SSC CGL Eligibility Verification

The appearing candidates, who are shortlisted and called for Document Verification, must produce all the documents that prove their eligibility for the posts.

  • Matriculation/ Secondary Certificate
  • Educational Qualification Certificate

    • In case of marriage of women: A photocopy of Husband’s passport showing names of spouses; or an attested copy of marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage; or an affidavit from husband and wife along with a joint photograph duly sworn before the Oath Commissioner.
    • In case of re-marriage of women: Divorce Deed/ Death Certificate (as the case may be) in respect of the first spouse. Along with that, a photocopy of the present husband’s passport showing names of spouse; or an attested copy of marriage certificate issued by the Registrar of Marriage; or an affidavit from husband and wife along with a joint photograph duly sworn before the Oath Commissioner.
    • In case of divorce of women: A certified copy of the Divorce Decree and Deed Poll/ Affidavit duly sworn before the Oath Commissioner.
    • Change of name for both male and female candidates in other circumstances: Deed Poll/ Affidavit duly sworn before the Oath Commissioner and paper cuttings of two leading daily newspaper in original (One daily newspaper should be of the area of applicant’s permanent and present address or nearby area) and Gazette Notification.
  • Any other document specified in the Admission Certificate issued for SSC CGL Document Verification.

Certification Requirements for Reserved Categories

  • Candidates who wish to be considered for the reservation benefits (for SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS/ PwD/ ESM) must submit the relevant certificate from the competent authority, in the prescribed format. Otherwise, their claim for reservation will not be considered and their candidature will be treated under Unreserved (UR). The format of the certificate is given in the detailed SSC CGL official notification.
  • The certificate of disability issued under the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protections of Rights and Full Participation) Act, 1995 (1 of 1996) will also be valid. Certificates in any other format will be rejected.
  • The last date for filling the online SSC CGL application forms is the last day to claim the SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS/ PwD status or other benefits like fee concession, reservation, age relaxation, etc.
  • The candidates seeking reservation benefits for OBCs must ensure that they possess the relevant certificate and do not fall in the creamy layer of the category.
  • It must be noted that the status of ‘reserved category’ (as applied) of the candidate will remain provisional till the authenticity of the relevant documents is verified and approved by the concerned authority.
  • The candidates who falsely claim reservation or any other benefit meant for SC/ ST/ OBC/ EWS/ PwD/ ESM categories will be debarred from the exam conducted by SSC.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria for Ex-Servicemen

To be considered as an ‘ex-serviceman’, the candidates have to be one of the following:

  • Personnel who has served in any rank whether as a combatant or non-combatant in the Regular Army, Navy and Air Force of India and
    • Who has been retired/ relieved/ discharged from such service whether at his own request or being relieved by the employer after earning his pension; or
    • Who has been relieved from service on medical grounds that can be attributed to military service or circumstances beyond his control and awarded medical or another disability pension; or
    • Who has been released from the service as a result of a reduction in the establishment.
  • Personnel who has been released from the service after completing the specific period of engagement, otherwise than at his own request, or by way of dismissal, or discharge on account of misconduct or inefficiency and has been given a gratuity; and includes personnel of the Territorial Army, namely, pension holders for continuous embodied service or broken spells of qualifying service;
  • Personnel of the Army Postal Service who are part of the Regular Army after retirement without reversion to their parent service with the pension, or are released from the service on medical grounds attributable to or aggravated by military service or circumstance beyond their control and awarded medical or other disability pensions;
  • Personnel who were on deputation in Army Postal Service for more than six months before April 14, 1987;
  • Gallantry award winners of the Armed forces including personnel of the Territorial Army;
  • Ex-recruits boarded out or relieved on medical grounds and granted medical disability pension.
  • A Matriculate Ex-Serviceman who has put at least 15 years of service with the Armed Forces shall be considered eligible for appointment to the reserved CGL vacancies for ESM in Group C posts. Thus, those non-graduate Ex-Servicemen who have been in service for less than 15 years service as on the closing date of applications, and would not complete 15 years within one year from the closing date of applications are not eligible to apply for this examination. Those candidates are not eligible for Group ‘B’ posts.
  • Age relaxation or reservation for ESM is not applicable to sons, daughters and dependents of Ex-Servicemen. Therefore, such candidates should not indicate their category as ex-servicemen.

Scribe Specifications

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria for Using Scribe

  • For persons with benchmark disabilities in the category of blindness, locomotor disability (both arms affected- BA), and cerebral palsy, the provision of using scribes is given, if desirable by the candidate.
  • In case of the remaining categories of persons with benchmark disabilities, the facility of using scribes will be given only upon producing a certificate at the time of the exam. The said certificate must state that the concerned candidate has physical limitations in writing and that a scribe is essential to write the examination on his behalf. It must be issued by the Chief Medical Officer/ Civil Surgeon, Medical Superintendent of a Government health care institution as per proforma.
  • The provision of using scribes/ passage readers will be provided to only those PwD candidates who have opted for the same while filling out the online application forms.
  • The candidates have the discretion to choose using their own scribes or to avail the facility of the scribes provided by the Commission. The same shall be chosen appropriately in the online application forms of the concerned candidates.
  • In such cases where the candidates are opting for their own scribes, the qualification of the scribe must be one step below that of the candidate taking the exam.
  • The candidates with benchmark disabilities opting for their own scribe shall be required to submit the details of the scribe at the time of the exam as per proforma. In addition, the scribe also has to produce a valid ID proof in original. Along with that, a photocopy of the same ID proof signed by the candidate and the scribe must be submitted. If it is found later, that the qualification of the scribe is not as declared by the candidate, then the candidate will be disqualified and his rights to the post will be forfeited.
  • In cases where the candidates opt for their own scribes, the latter must not be a candidate for the exam. If a candidate is found to be assisting another PwD candidate as a scribe in the examination, the candidature of both candidates will be canceled.
  • The candidates who are allowed the provision of use scribes will be given a compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of the examination.
  • Such candidates who are allowed the use of scribes but are opting not to use the facility will also be given the compensatory time of 20 minutes per hour of the exam.
  • No other attendant apart from the scribes of the allowed candidates will be permitted to enter the exam hall.
  • One-eyed and partially blind candidates who are able to read the normal question paper set with or without the help of magnifying glasses and to write or indicate their answers using the same will be allowed the use of magnifying glasses in the exam hall. They will not be entitled to use scribes. They will have to bring their own magnifying glasses to the exam hall.
  • The PwD candidates who have opted to avail the facility of scribes or passage readers and/ or compensatory time must produce the documents required for eligibility of the same during the Document Verification round too. Failure to bring relevant documents will lead to the cancellation of their candidature for the exam. They will not be considered for any of the posts.

SSC CGL Selection/ Disqualification of Candidates

  • Candidates’ success in the examination confers no right of appointment unless the Government is satisfied that the candidate is suitable in all respects for appointment to the service/ post. To ensure the same, the Government can carry out any enquiry as may be considered necessary.
  • At the time of the SSC CGL written examination, the detailed information related to the SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria and other related aspects will not be scrutinized.
  • According to the terms and conditions highlighted in the SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria, the Commission will ‘provisionally’ accept the aspirants.
  • When the scrutiny of SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria will be undertaken, if any discrepancy will be found in the recruitment process, then the candidature of the aspirants will be cancelled. This final decision will be taken by the commission.
  • If a candidate is finally selected but does not receive any correspondence from the Commission or the concerned User Department/ Ministry/ Organization within a period of one year since the date of the declaration of final result, he/ she must communicate immediately thereafter with the concerned User Department.
  • The decision of the Commission in all the matters related to eligibility, acceptance or rejection of the applications, penalty for false information, mode of selection, conduct of exams, allotment of SSC CGL exam centres, selection and allotment of posts/ organizations to selected candidates will be final and binding on the candidates and no enquiry/ correspondence will be entertained in this regard.
  • No person, (a) who has entered into, or contracted a marriage with a person having a spouse living, or (b) who, having a spouse living has entered into, or contracted a marriage with any person shall be eligible for appointment to the service. However, the Central Government may exempt any person from the operation of this rule if satisfied that such marriage is permissible under the personal law applicable to such person and the other party to the marriage and there are other grounds for doing so.

Debarment of Candidates from SSC Exams

If the candidates are found to be indulging, at any stage, in any of the malpractices given below, their candidature for SSC CGL examination will be cancelled. They will also be debarred from the exams conducted by the Commission for the period listed below.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria: Additional Specifications

There are some additional specifications for each of the SSC CGL eligibility factors. The candidates must know these to avoid any issues during the exam.

Additional Specifications for SSC CGL Nationality Criteria

  • The candidates belonging to points 2, 3, and 4 mentioned above, i.e. all the candidates except Indian citizens, shall possess and be able to produce the Certificates of Eligibility issued by a competent authority in the Government of India.
  • The Certificate of Eligibility required for the candidates mentioned above is required before the offer of appointment is made. The candidates might be admitted to the exam before producing the certificate but the final recruitment will be done only afterward.

Additional Specifications for SSC CGL Age Limit and Relaxation

  • Commission finally allows posts on the basis of merit-cum-preferences of posts given by the candidates and once a post is allotted, no change of posts will be made due to the non-fulfillment of any post-specific physical/ medical/ educational requirements. If the candidate has been selected for their preferred post but fails to meet the medical/ physical/ educational standards, his/ her candidature will be rejected and he/she will not be considered for other preferences.
  • While mentioning the preferred post, the candidates must note that some posts have specific requirements like Physical Standards, Physical Tests, and Medical Standards. They must fulfill all the mentioned requirements. The tests to ensure the same will be conducted by the concerned department after final selection.
  • Candidates who are allotted the post of Assistant Audit Officer/ Assistant Accounts Officer will be posted to several offices of the Department across India on the basis of vacancy and merit. The candidates with a degree in Commerce or the desired qualification will preferably be allocated to the Commercial stream based on the administrative requirements and available vacancies.
  • Date of Birth given in the online application form must be the same as the one recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary Examination Certificate. The same will be considered by the Commission while determining the age and no request for change will be entertained in any case.
  • To be given the benefits of Ex-serviceman, the serviceman of any of the three forces must have already acquired, at the relevant time of submitting his application for the Post/ Service, the status of ex-serviceman or is in a position to establish his acquired entitlement by documentary evidence from the competent authority that he would complete the specified term of engagement from the Armed Forces within the stipulated period of one year from the closing date for receipt of application. Such candidates must also acquire the status of an ex-serviceman within the stipulated period of one year from the closing date of receipt of applications.
  • Ex-servicemen who have already been employed in Government civil jobs in Group ‘C’ & ‘D’ posts on regular basis under the benefits of reservation for the ex-servicemen will not be eligible for reservation and fee concessions under the ESM category. However, they can take the benefits of reservation as ESM for subsequent employment if he, immediately after joining the civil job, gives self-declaration or undertaking to the employer about the date-wise details of application for multiple vacancies applied for before joining the respective civil job.
  • The period of ‘Call up Service’ of an ESM is considered under service rendered in the Armed Forces while providing the age relaxations

Additional Specifications for SSC CGL Educational Criteria

The candidates must possess the essential qualifications mentioned for each post on or before the closing date of filling the online application forms.

  • As per the notification released by Human Resource Development dated 10-06-2015 published in the Gazette of India, all the degrees/ certificates/ diplomas awarded through Open and Distance Learning mode of education by the Universities established by an Act of Parliament or State Legislature, Institutions Deemed to be Universities under Section 3 of the University Grants Commission Act, 1956 and Institutions of National Importance declared under an Act of Parliament stand automatically recognized for the purpose of employment to posts and services under the Central Government provided they have been approved by the Distance Education Bureau, University Grants Commission. However, according to the same notification, if the said degrees are not recognized for the relevant period when the candidates acquired their qualifications, they will not be accepted under the Educational Qualification mentioned in the CGL notification.
  • As per the UGC Regulations regarding Open and Distance Learning, 2017 published in the Official Gazette of India on 23-06-2017, under Part-III (8) (v), the degrees and programs in engineering, medicine, dental, nursing, pharmacy, architecture, and physiotherapy, etc. are not permitted to be offered under Open and Distance Learning mode. However, pursuant to the Hon’ble Supreme Court Order dated 11-03-2019 in MA No. 3092/2018 in W.P. (C) No. 382/2018 under the title Mukul Kumar Sharma & others Vs AICTE and others, the B. Tech. degree or diploma in Engineering awarded by IGNOU (Indira Gandhi National Open University) to the students who were enrolled in the courses in or before the academic year 2009-10 shall be treated as valid, wherever applicable.
  • All the candidates shortlisted and called for the Document Verification round will have to produce the documents relevant to their educational qualifications. They include certificates such as mark sheets, for all three years of Graduation/ Provisional Certificate/ Degree of Graduation in original as proof of having acquired the minimum educational qualification on or before the date stipulated in the notification. Failing to do so, the candidature of the candidates will be canceled by the SSC.
  • Only the candidates who are able to prove, through valid documents, that the results of the qualifying examinations were declared on or before the stipulated date, along with their passing status in the examination, will be considered as meeting the required educational qualifications. It is of utmost importance that the result of the requisite educational qualification must have been declared by the university or institute by a specific date. Mere processing of the result by the University/ Institute by the specified date does not fulfill the requirements of educational qualification.
  • In such cases where the candidates possess equivalent educational qualifications, they will be required to also produce the relevant Equivalence Certificate from the concerned authorities on the day of the Document Verification round. The final decision regarding the selection of such candidates will be made by the concerned Appointing Authorities or the User Departments.

SSC CGL Eligibility Criteria 2023: Points to Remember

  • SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ESM, and PwD candidates, who are selected on their own merit (without relaxed standards) will not be adjusted against the vacancies set aside for reserved candidates. Such candidates will be accommodated against the unreserved vacancies in the post as per their position in the overall merit or the vacancies earmarked for their category (whichever is advantageous to them). The reserved vacancies will be filled up separately from amongst eligible candidates of SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ESM, and PwD candidates.
  • SC, ST, OBC, EWS, ESM, and PwD candidates who clear the selection process on the basis of relaxed standards i.e. age limit, experience or qualifications, permitted number of chances, extended zone of consideration, etc., irrespective of his merit position, is to be counted against reserved vacancies and not against unreserved vacancies. They might also be recommended under the relaxed standard to the extent of the number of vacancies reserved for them, in order to make up for the deficiency in the reserved quota (irrespective of their rank in the order of merit).
  • In the cases where the Ex-Servicemen are concerned, deduction of the years of military service rendered from their age is permissible against the reserved or unreserved posts. Such exemptions will not be termed as relaxed standards in regard to age.
  • Similarly, for PwD candidates, a relaxation of 10 years in the upper age limit will not be termed as a relaxed standard.
