The National Eligibility Test (NET) also known as UGC NET is conducted to determine the eligibility of candidates for the posts of an Assistant professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF) every year. Initially, the test was conducted by CBSE, but in 2018, the National Test Agency (NTA) conducts the NET on behalf of the UGC. For the candidates who are applying for JRF, the upper age limit is 30 years while there is no age limit for the post of Assistant Professor.

The UGC NET 2023 Examination is conducted for candidates who wish to become “Assistant Professor” or “Junior Research Fellowship & Assistant Professor Programme”. According to the UGC NET Exam Pattern, there will be two exams i.e. Paper I and Paper II.

The UGC NET is subject to the Government of India's reservation policy as well. According to the reservation policy, 10% of seats are set aside in Central Universities and Institutions that are considered to be Universities for the General-Economically Weaker Section (GEN-EWS), 15% are set aside for the Scheduled Caste (SC) category, 7.5% are set aside for the Scheduled Tribe (ST), and 27% are set aside for the Other Backward Classes belonging to the Non Creamy layer (OBC-NCL).
