UGC NET Score Calculation

  • Around 6% of the candidates will qualify the exam for Assistant Professor.
  • Total slots will be allocated to different categories as per the reservation policy of the Government of India.
  • In order to be considered for ‘both JRF and Assistant Professorship’ posts, the candidates need to have appeared in both the papers and secured at least 40% in aggregate (35% for reserved categories) in the exam.

The number of candidates to be declared qualified in any subject for a particular category is derived as per the methodology illustrated below:

Example: Candidate appears for Economics subject

The aggregate percentage of the two papers corresponding to the number of slots arrived at, will determine the qualifying cutoff for eligibility for the post of Assistant Professor ‘in ‘Economics’ for the SC category. A similar yardstick shall be employed for deriving the subject-wise qualifying UGC NET cutoffs for all categories.

All candidates who had applied for both ‘Eligibility for JRF & Assistant Professor’ out of the total number of qualified candidates derived as per Step IV, shall constitute the consideration zone for JRF.

The total number of slots available for awarding JRF is allocated among different categories as per the reservation policy of the Government of India. The procedure for subject-wise and category-wise allocation of JRF slots is illustrated below:

Example:

The aggregate percentage of the two paper scores corresponding to the number of JRF slots arrived at, will determine the qualifying cutoff for JRF in ‘Economics’ for the ST category.

Normalization Process

UGC NET Normalization Process

Normalization of the scores is based on the percentile method to calculate the result for the examination. Through normalization, the difficulty level of exam is adjusted thereby providing an unbiased score. The scores are allotted between 100 and 0 for each session of the exam. Through Normalization, raw scores are converted to Percentile.

Formula:

Total Percentile = Number of candidates who appeared in the ‘Session’ with raw score EQUAL TO OR LESS than the candidate/Total Number of candidates who appeared in the ‘session’.

Finally, the raw scores are merged with percentile for both sessions to calculate the final result.

UGC NET Result for Junior Research Fellowship (JRF)

After the above process, a separate cutoff list is prepared for the students eligible for JRF. Below is the formula to calculate the score and thus the eligibility.

A number of slots under General Category for JRF = (Number of candidates who have opted for eligibility for Assistant Professor in that subject X Number of slots available under General category) / Total number of general candidates who have opted for JRF and are qualified for eligibility for an assistant professor.

UGC NET Qualifying Score

  • A separate category-wise and subject-wise merit list will be prepared for the candidates who would have obtained the qualifying percentile.
  • The top 6% of candidates from the merit list will be declared NET qualified for eligibility of Assistant professorship only.
  • Among NET-qualified candidates, a separate merit list will be created for the award of JRF.
  • Minimum marks that a candidate must score in UGC NET to qualify will be:
Category Paper I + Paper II
General/ EWS 120 marks (40%)
OBC-NCL/PwD/SC/ST 105 marks (35%)
