Around 10000 applicants have been called for the written exam and Physical Fitness Test (PFT) exam. The shortlisting will be undertaken based on the percentage of (10+2 exam) for the written exam and of the applicants. The cut-off marks usually vary from state. Also, the vacancies are assigned state-wise (different state to state).

In the initial training period, all new employees will receive a monthly grant of Rs. 5700. Upon successful completion of the training period, the salary group, military service, and in some cases Group "X", Dearness Allowance, and the allowance for each transaction, minus the stipend already paid will be determined. All Indian Navy sailors are classified as "X" and "Y" for salary purposes. Artificer Apprentices (AA) are in group "X" and the rest of the sailors are in group "Y".

Indian Navy SSR Benefits:
During and after training, sailors have free access to books, reading materials, uniforms, meals, accommodation and more. Upon completion of each training stage, sailors will take annual leave with free rail rights.
Sailors are entitled to discounts on treatment and vacation travel for self-employed persons and their families. Group housing allowances and other privileges are also available at government expense. Rs. 25 lakh insurance is provided by IHQMOD (Navy) with a monthly nominal INR 2500.
Sailors can take up to 60 days of annual leave and 30 days of extra leave each year, depending on service requirements. Other benefits include post-retirement pensions, bonuses and cumulative leave. Other eligible costs include parenting allowance and rent. Indian Navy sailors also receive pre-release training and are professionally supported after retirement from the Navy.
